Mehfil-E-Samaa in Dallas

Published on September 6th, 2015

Ghayoor Moiz Mustafa Qawwal and Party performed at an all-night mehfil at the residence of Sharoot and Ally Adnan in Dallas, Texas, recently. Ghayoor Moiz Mustafa Qawwal and Party represent the thirty-fourth (34th) generation of a family of musicians specializing in qawwali and trace back their ancestry directly to Miyan Samat Bin Ibrahim who was the very first qawwal in the world. Samat Bin Ibrahim, together with eleven (11) other young men, was trained in the art of qawwali by Hazrat Amir Khusrao in the thirteenth century. The group of the twelve (12) young musicians came to be known as the Qawwal Bachay. The school of music thus established and followed by the scions of the twelve (12) musicians is known as the Qawwal Bachon Ka Gharana.

The qawwals performed a number of qawwalis, during the mehfil, including Kangana which was sung for Coke Studio and, subsequently for the feature film, the Reluctant Fundamentalist, by their father and uncle. The event was attended by Shireen Khan, Abida Suhail, Shazia Farooq, Saba Nanjiani, Arif Mahmood, Mihir Patel, Chittaranjan Gupta, Athar Usmani and many other lovers of music from in and around Dallas.
